Here's a great shot of the Tochihara river behind our house. More like the Tochihara brook, but you get the idea. After a typhoon it is certainly Class VI: (Unrunnable)
The temperature difference from the river to the yard is at least 5C sometimes more. It's full of yamame (trout) and resident osanshouo (giant salamander) up to 2-3 feet long!!! Besides being beautiful the river provides water for the rice paddies for the entire valley. As well as wading/playing areas for us. It is the reason I fell in love with this place, that and the slight elevation of 400 meters, keeps us fairly cool in summer. Especially at night.
